Cement Trade Statistics Dashboard April 2024
Despite cement imports increased by 37.7 percent y-y in April 2024, following a 4.1 percent decline in March. With close to 400 000 tons imported during the first four months of 2023, imports increased by 46.9 percent, and to 1 058 188 tons over the last 12 months. Imports are mainly from Vietnam (90 percent of the total in April), but imports Mozambique has gradually increased and has more than doubled over the last 12 months and accounted for 6.5 percent of total imports during the month. The custom value (or FOB price) averaged R842/ton during the first four months, translating to R42/50kg, relatively unchanged from 2023. Since 2017 the local producers have lost over R10bn in revenue due to the impact of imports. Imports from Namibia and Mozambique rose 42 percent and 115 percent y-y respectively over the last 12 months entrying the country via Skilpadsnek and Kompatipoort, representing around 7.5 percent of total cement imports compared to less than 4 percent in 2022.
Clinker imports, mainly from United Arab Emirates (contributing 69 percent via Port Elizabeth) and Saudi Arabia (contributing 31 percent via Durban), increased by a 233 percent y-y during the first four months, with a monthly average of 52 000 tons imported during February and April 2024. Over 383 000 tons of clinker have been imported over the 12-months up to April 2024.
As imports surge, along a more muted performance by the domestic market, the imported market represented 15 percent of the domestic market in the 1st quarter of 2024, compared to an average of 11 percent in 2023. This means the import market is gradually taken a larger share of the domestic market, with imports no longer only entering the market via the traditional coastal areas such as Kwazulu Natal and Eastern Cape.
