R35bn Transnet Push and R8.1bn Metro Funding Put Infrastructure Delivery Back in Focus
The past week brought a renewed focus on infrastructure funding and project delivery, led by Transnet’s planned R35 billion funding request for projects through 2030 and the R8.1 billion AIIB-backed programme targeting water, electricity and waste services across the eight metros. Water infrastructure featured particularly strongly, with progress on the uMkhomazi Water Project alongside an estimated R4.6 billion rehabilitation requirement for eThekwini’s wastewater treatment works. In the Western Cape, the release of Annandale Farm creates a sizeable new residential development opportunity of potentially 5,000 to 10,000 homes.
There was also more immediate construction activity, including the R231 million first phase of the eMbalenhle–Secunda road upgrade and the R950 million Kruger National Park reconstruction programme. However, Johannesburg’s stalled Hursthill reservoir again highlighted the execution risks surrounding municipal infrastructure programmes. Attention now shifts to SIDSSA 2026, where eight priority infrastructure projects are expected to be announced for project preparation support, potentially adding further depth to the medium-term construction pipeline.
