Cement Trade Statistics Dashboard December 2023

Cement imports into South Africa rose 28 percent y-y in 2023 to a total of 933 975 tons, with a total Fee on Board (FOB) value of R802 million. Imports entering the country via Durban increased by 14 percent, three-fold via Port Elizabeth and doubled via the port of Cape Town. Imports via Skilpadshek (mainly from Namibia) and Komatipoort (mainly from Mozambique) also showed a notable increase. As a result, the contribution of Durban as entry point lowered from 92 percent in 2022 to 82 percent.  Imports from Vietnam rose 21 percent, with imports also showing an increase from Namibia, Mozambique with imports also being registered for the first time from Hong Kong (coming in through Durban). Production from local producers is estimated at around 13.7 million tons, suggesting imports accounted for 6.4 percent of total domestic supplies, up from 4.9 percent in 2022.
