Construction Labour Force 2023Q4

Along a rising unemployment rate of 32.1 percent in the 4th quarter of 2023 (expanded rate of 50 percent), the construction labour force slowed marginally in the last quarter of 2023, down 2.6 percent, but remains higher by 9 percent compared to the same quarter in 2022. This brings the overall average increase to 10.7 percent in 2023, with a stronger 15 percent increase in the formal job market, and a moderate 3.5 percent in the informal construction sector. Most of the provinces, except for Free State and North West (despite its stellar performance in Q3), recorded a stronger construction labour force in 2023 compared to 2022.  Limpopo's construction labour force reached the highest level in Q4, dating back to 2008, with a good performance also shown in its mining sector.
