Building Plans Approved by Province and Type January 1994 - October 2025

Building approvals were weaker in October 2025, coming off a higher base in 2024, when approvals exceeded R10bn. Western Cape declined by 16 percent, with Gauteng finally showing a modest recovery of 3 percent y-y for the month, supported by an increase in retail space approvals. The star performer was the Eastern Cape where approvals rose near 80 percent, supported by an increase in demand for office space. North West also edged higher, where there has been an increase in demand for office and industrial space.  Over the last 12 months, while Western Cape continues to dominate, Eastern Cape is now showing the strongest year on year percentage increase in private sector demand for new building construction according to the number of SQM approved by local authorities.
