Building Approvals Annual 2023

Knysna maintained its position for the 3rd consecutive year as the municipality that had the highest number of sqm approved over a 12-month period, including both home and other commercial buildings. However, approvals fell by 7 percent y-y in 2023, to just under 800 000 sqm. The southern parts of Tshwane ended on par with 2022, with 460 000 sqm approved during 2023, the area with the 2nd highest number of sqm approved. This means private projects worth over R6bn were approved in Knysna during 2023, compared to R5.1bn in the southern parts of Tshwane.  In terms of growth, Germiston within Ekurhuleni, recorded the highest increase measured in sqm, with approvals up 173 percent (or 127 000sqm) to just over 200 000 sqm. George followed closely, with a 46 percent increase (or 111 000sqm) to 352 000 sqm. Other areas that recorded a notable increase include Mbombela, Stellenbosh, Benoni, Edenvale, Tshwane (region 5) and Mangaung.

Approvals during 2023, will continue to impact investment in 2024, provided that projects reach construction and are not postponed or delayed.

This dataset is a summary of the annual building statistics released by Stats SA, at municipal and provincial level, with a focus on approvals, from 2010 to 2023.
