Cement Trade Statistics Dashboard May 2024

Cement imports were weaker in May 2024, down 20.4 percent y-y, to 46 865 tons. Vietnam continues to dominate the import market, with just over 8 000 tons also coming in from Mozambique and Nambia, that has gained in market share over recent months.  Following strong increases at the start of 2024, imports are still higher by 34.7 percent y-y for the first five months of the year, following a 28 percent increase in 2023. The contribution of Durban as an entry point slowed from 82 percent in 2023 to 77 percent between January and May 2024, as more cement is being imported via Cape Town, Skilpadsnek and Komatipoort.

There were no clinker imports reported for May 2024, but increased by 49 percent y-y between January and May, as imports increased between February and April 2024. Clinker imports are mainly from United Arab Emirates (contributing 69 percent via Port Elizabeth) and Saudi Arabia (contributing 31 percent via Durban).

Estimates for local cement production show a near 8 percent increase in the month of April, with a similar increase on a year to date basis. Estimates for the first four months up to April, suggests that the import market contributed 14.3 percent of domestic production, from an average of 11 percent in 2023. This means the import market is gradually taken a larger share of the domestic market, with imports no longer only entering the market via the traditional coastal areas such as Kwazulu Natal and Eastern Cape.
