Provincial Governments increase expenditure on buildings and other fixed structures by 8.6 percent y-y in 2023/24

Actual expenditure by provinces on buildings and other fixed structures increased by a nominal 2.1 percent y-y in the 1st quarter of 2024 (last quarter of the 2023/24 financial year) compared to the same period in 2023. According to Treasury provinces spent R27.6bn on buildings and other fixed structures (without providing a breakdown of these expenditures), an increase of 8.6 percent y-y compared to the 2022/23 financial period, and an average expenditure rate of 93 percent, leaving just over R2bn unspent. Kwazulu Natal was the worst performing province, with R1.3bn left unspent (with 81 percent of the its annual R7.2bn spent), with only a marginal 0.9 percent y-y increase.
