Local Government inefficiencies exposed, as government and private stakeholders push strategic reforms

South Africa’s construction and infrastructure sector saw another eventful week, characterised by renewed investment activity in energy, logistics and mixed-use developments, alongside growing concerns around municipal instability, procurement failures and infrastructure deterioration. Major developments included new transmission and rail initiatives, large private-sector backed projects, stronger infrastructure funding commitments, and continued momentum in renewable energy investment.

At the same time, governance failures, tender controversies, rising infrastructure risks, and financial pressure on municipalities such as Johannesburg, Nelson Mandela Bay and several Eastern Cape municipalities continued to weigh on the sector outlook. The week ultimately reinforced the growing divide between expanding investment opportunities and the country’s ongoing infrastructure execution and maintenance challenges.
