KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga Drive Construction Value Surge Despite Nationwide Decline in Project Volumes
South Africa’s construction sector showed mixed results in October 2025, as the total value of projects awarded rose 33 percent y-y to R11.6 billion, despite a 25 percent drop in the number of projects. The surge was driven by large infrastructure awards, notably SANRAL’s R6.1 billion N3 Mariannhill–Key Ridge upgrade in KwaZulu-Natal and Rand Water’s R1.4 billion Palmiet System expansion in Gauteng. KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga led the recovery with year-to-date values up 47 percent and 298 percent respectively, offsetting steep declines in provinces such as the Western Cape and Free State. Tender activity weakened again after a brief 3rd quarter rebound, with the number of tenders released down 7 percent y-y and 16 percent year-to-date, while SANRAL tenders dropped by a third.
