PULSE - Cement Trade Report February 2024

In the first two months of 2024, South Africa imported 115,974 tons of cement, a 103% increase from the previous year, largely from Vietnam. Durban remains the primary entry point for imports, followed by Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. Cement prices increased slightly, with electricity costs being a significant concern for local production. Export volumes also rose, primarily to Botswana, Lesotho, and Eswatini. Despite challenges in the construction sector, companies like PPC and Sephaku Cement saw market capitalization growth. Clinker imports increased but at a lower value due to a drop in the FOB rate. The UAE now dominates clinker imports compared to Saudi Arabia in previous years.
