Preferred Construction Material Supplier and Competitor Survey March 2024
The Preferred Supplier & Competitor Survey (PSS) is a monthly survey conducted among contractors to determine material suppliers and brands involved in building and civil projects across the country.
The survey conducted in March 2024 included 291 projects valued at R13.3 billion, mainly awarded in August 2023, with additional projects awarded between November 2021 and June 2023. Forty-nine percent of the projects were deemed unsuitable for the research, including routine road maintenance and mechanical installations. There were challenges with the Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act compliance, with some respondents declining to share supply chain details. Political instability, budget constraints, and the influence of the 'construction mafia' were highlighted concerns, extending beyond construction sites to intimidation in supply chains and decision-making levels.
Project delays were noted across various sectors and regions, attributed to financial constraints, criminal interference, and non-payment issues. The construction market saw an increase in awarded projects in February 2024 compared to the previous year, particularly in the civil sector, with KwaZulu Natal leading in project value. However, there were significant cancellations and postponements, indicating ongoing challenges in the industry, especially in certain provinces.
