Provincial Construction Pipeline Dashboard 2023Q4 (March 2024)

Based on key construction indidcators released as at the 4th quarter of 2023, the annual change in the Construction Pipeline (based on approvals and tenders) slowed to 4.1 percent (nominal) by the end of December 2023, following a 12.4 percent contraction at the end of the 3rd quarter 2023. This may suggest a possible slowdown in market activity towards the second half of 2024/25, by comparison to the same period in 2023/24.  Activity levels in the Western Cape are showing signs of being under pressure as its pipeline contracted by 9.3 percent following the more robust double digt growth rates shown since 2022,  with Limpopo's pipeline also now in negative territory. Following robust grwoth in Northern Cape's pipeline, where the value of the pipeline has doubled in the first six months of 2023, the pipeline has fallen by 17 percent over the last 12 months. Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga and Free State are provinces that are showing a more postivie increase in potential construction activity based on projects that have been approved and released out to tender.

A full provincial review including a three year forecast will be released shortly.
