Preferred Construction Material Supplier and Competitor Survey February 2024

The Preferred Supplier & Competitor Survey (PSS) is a monthly survey conducted among contractors to determine material suppliers and brands involved in building and civil projects across the country. The February 2024 survey covered 259 projects with an estimated value of R15.8bn, revealing an increase in project value and number compared to the previous year. However, challenges persist due to political instability and interference from the 'construction mafia', extending beyond construction sites to public transport and services. Contractors report delays and non-payment issues, exacerbated by the influence of criminal elements. Despite these challenges, some respondents remain optimistic about the industry's future, citing improved understanding of regulations and ample work opportunities. Additionally, construction market activity shows fluctuations in project awards and cancellations, with ongoing concerns about tender activity and postponements.
