NEW - Provincial Road Construction Activity (Km's) 2013Q1 - 2023Q2

This time-series dataset includes provincial road projects out to tender, awarded, postponed, cancelled and at an early warning stage, with a focus on the number of kilometres involved in the projects.  The objective of this dataset is purely for strategic planning purposes, and since this is not a lead service in terms of tenders, please use the Databuild Reference number included in the dataset for more information on a particular project.  Road projects include routine maintenance, road markings, new roads, additions and upgrades.   This dataset will be updated on a quarterly basis.

Road projects awarded during the first six months of 2023, included new and upgrades to 10 250 kilometres, almost double compared to the same period in 2022. Tenders increased by 41 percent to over 8 500 km.  Activity in 2022 declined by 19 percent in terms of awards, although tender activity recorded a moderate 2 percent increase to 14 800 km. Measured on the basis of a 5-quarter moving average, activity levels (in km's) has recovered back to 2017 levels both in terms of awards and tender activity.  There is however a shift between upgrades and new construction and strong provincial differences. SANRAL awarded several multi billion rand projects in the first six months of 2023. Provincial details of the projects are included in the dataset.
