NEW - Provincial Road Construction Activity (Km's) 2013Q1 - 2023Q3

This time-series dataset includes provincial road projects out to tender, awarded, postponed, cancelled and at an early warning stage, with a focus on the number of kilometres involved in the projects. The objective of this dataset is purely for strategic planning purposes, and since this is not a lead service in terms of tenders, please use the Databuild Reference number included in the dataset for more information on a particular project. Road projects include routine maintenance, road markings, new roads, additions and upgrades. This dataset will be updated on a quarterly basis.

Road projects awarded during the first nine months of 2023, included new and upgrades to 12 262 kilometres, almost double compared to the same period in 2022. Tenders increased by over 100 percent to over 20 000 km. Measured on the basis of a 5-quarter moving average, activity levels (in km's) has recovered back to 2017 levels both in terms of awards and tender activity. There is however a shift between upgrades and new construction and strong provincial differences.  Northern Cape contributed 36 percent to the total km's awarded in the first three quarters of 2023, followed by Eastern Cape and Western Cape. The focus, in terms of tenders, shifts to upgrades in provinces such as Kwazulu Natal, Free State, Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape and the North West Province. SANRAL awarded several multi billion rand projects in 2023. Provincial details of the projects are included in the dataset.
