Nominal turnover generated fell by 12.2 percent y-y in the 3rd quarter of 2022 to R72.5bn and 13 percent y-y between Jan – Sep 2022 to R211bn
Turnover generated by larger firms fell by 26.3 percent y-y, with margins recovering to 2.5 percent.
Turnover by medium size firms contracted by 13.5 percent y-y in Q3, with margins escalating to an average of 8.2 percent.
Smaller firms showed considerable increase in turnover over the last four quarters, but higher costs associated with employment and equipment contained margins to an average of 2.6 percent in Q3.
The contribution by larger firms to total income generated improved marginally to 47.2 percent in Q3 from an average of 56 percent in 2021.
Profit in rand terms improved by 46 percent y-y compared to Q3 in 2021 but remains lower for the first three quarters of 2022.
Expenditure towards employment fell 17 percent y-y, representing 19.1 percent of turnover.
Expenditure by the construction sector towards hiring and leasing of equipment decreased by 37 percent y-y to R1.2bn in Q3. Smaller size firms spent the highest percentage of turnover on plant and equipment at 3.0 percent.
The closing value of work in progress slumped by 65 percent y-y (off a higher base in 2021), increasing the risk of a potentially weaker environment for the 4th quarter.
