Construction Market Sentiment remains cautious despite stronger orderbooks
Investor sentiment towards South Africa’s listed construction sector weakened further in August 2026, with the Construction Market Sentiment Index (CMSI) falling 6.0% month-on-month and combined market capitalisation declining from R244.9 billion to R230.2 billion. Weakness was broad-based, with contractors down 6.3%, suppliers 2.9%, retailers 4.9% and non-residential property funds 6.7%. Residential property funds were the only segment to strengthen, rising 3.1%.
Despite the weaker short-term trend, the CMSI remains 12.3% above August 2025, supported by suppliers and property funds, while contractors and retailers remain below year-earlier levels. The August performance therefore points to an increasingly selective recovery: stronger construction pipelines and order books are evident, but investors appear to be looking for clearer evidence that these will translate into sustained revenue growth, margins and cash flow.
