Construction Labour Force 2023Q2

The construction labour force expanded by 10.8 percent y-y in the 2nd quarter of 2023, and reached the highest level since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Western Cape took the spotlight with its labour force in the construction reaching a 15 year record high dating back to 2008. Western Cape surpassed Kwazulu Natal as the province with the second highest construction labour force. Gauteng's labour force shrunk in Q2, in line with weak infrastructure expenditure and a strong decline in the private building market. Despite being the province with the smallest labour force market in construction, Northern Cape recorded a 135 percent y-y increase as infrastructure developments start to take off in the province.
