Construction Labour Force 2023Q1

The construction labour force ended marginally lower in 2023Q1 compared to the previous quarter, down 0.9 percent, with similar declines reported in both the formal and informal market. However compared to the much more depressed market conditions in the 1st quarter of 2022, the labour force has expanded by 128 000, or 11.9 percent, against an overall national increase of 9.6 percent. The construction sector was the 3rd best performing sector, with Utilities up 31 percent y-y (very small contribution), and the finance sector recording a 14.4 percent y-y increase. The mining sector recorded a small 1.6 percent y-y increase following a sharp 5.4 percent drop from the 4th quarter of 2022Q4, making it one of the worst performing sectors in the current quarter.  Gauteng had the largest influence on the increase in the construction labour force since the 1st quarter of 2022 and recorded a 34.6 percent y-y increase, against a more modest 8.3 percent recorded for the Western Cape. Eastern Cape and Kwazulu Natal both outpaced the Western Cape with annual increases of 15.9 percent and 10.8 percent respectively.  Only three provinces recorded a contraction in their labour force since last year, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West.
