Construction Activity Dataset July 2025

Industry Insight’s construction project activity database shows construction activity, at national, provincial and municipal level of building and civil projects out to tender, awarded, postponed and cancelled. Developed in association with Databuild, the dataset has more than 20 years history, depicting real time activity affecting the local construction market.

In July 2025, South Africa's construction sector experienced a mixed performance. While the total number of projects awarded dropped 29.5% year-on-year to 148 projects, the total value of awards increased by 25% to R9.6 billion. This divergence was driven by the awarding of several large-scale civil and building contracts, including the R2.7bn SANRAL project to Raubex in Mpumalanga, the Paarl Wastewater Treatment Works awarded to Stefanutti in the Western Cape and a Rand Water project in Gauteng. Provincial trends were uneven. The bulk of awards were in Mpumalanga, where the total value of awards rose five fold over the last seven months.  Provinces that recorded higher award values for the month of April include Western Cape, Northern Cape, Mpumalanga, and Gauteng. With the total value of construction projects awarded during the first seven months  up R27bn, Mpumalanga has played the most significant role, followed by Gauteng, according to information released by Databuild. However, activity levels in terms of volumes remained depressed across all provinces, with only Gauteng showing a modest 4 percent y-y increase in the number of projects awarded.
