Construction Activity Dataset April 2026
April reverses gains in tender activity during the last three months
Total construction tender activity was weaker in April 2026, following two consecutive months of double digit increases. Tender activity slowed to 158 projects, dominated by Kwazulu Natal and Eastern Cape. Overall tender activity increased by 11.4 percent y-y in the first four months of 2026, or by 75 tenders to 732. Kwazulu Natal seems to be making a comeback with a robust increase compared to the same period in 2025. Eastern Cape and North West also showed a notable increase, against a 31 percent decline in tenders in Limpopo.
The number of awards remained under pressure and fell by more than 30 percent y-y in April 2026, and other than Eastern Cape and Gauteng, all provinces showed fewer awards in the first four months of 2026.
Fewer project cancellations have been reported, although more than 120 projects have been cancelled in the first four months. However, there are provincial differences. Western Cape recorded the strongest increase in cancellations, up by 9 projects (or 82 percent) to 20 projects, with the Free State and Northern Cape also showing an increase, albeit moderately. Although the bulk of cancellations were in Gauteng, fewer projects were cancelled compared to the same period in 2025, down 17 percent y-y.
