Cement Trade Statistics Dashboard August 2024

Cementitious production recovered marginally with a 0.4 percent y-y increase in August, following an average 3.5 percehnt contraction in the previous three months.  For the eight-month period up to August, estimated production levels rose 2.2 percent, against a 25 percent increase in cement imported.  Preliminary results show a strong increase in import volumes during July and August, with imports possibly coming in from Pakistan for the first time since 2021 at R549/ton (FOB Value) - although this is still under investigation. Imports from Mozambique has already increased by 73 percent for the first eight months of 2024 to over 42 000 tons, compared to 2023, with over 25 000 tons coming in from Namibia. Bulk of the cement imported during July and August came in via Durban, followed by Komatipoort (from Mozambique) and Cape Town. An estimated 757 518 tons were imported up to August 2024, compared to 649 000 tons exported from South Africa to mainly Botswana, Lesotho and Eswatini.
