Building Plans Approved Provincial Summary September 2024

In terms of private sector residential approvals, the Western Cape continued to significantly outpace Gauteng in terms of single larger dwellings, with over 1.1 million sqm approved over the last 12 months, compared to 831,000 sqm in Gauteng. Both provinces, however, showed notable contractions of more than 13 percent year-on-year.  Only two provinces managed to buck the trend over the last 12 months, Free State (where the rate of increase accelerated to 11.9 percent y-y) and an 8.8 percent increase in Limpopo.   In terms of multi-unit housing developments, Western Cape remains in the lead, followed closely by Gauteng, but with double digit declines recorded for both provinces.
