Building Plans Approved by Province and Type Jan 1994 - September 2024
The nominal value of private sector building approvals increased by 19 percent y-y to R9.4bn, following a (revised) 1.5 percent decrease in August. Measured in square metres, it is the third month of growth, that accelerated to an annual increase of 19 percent y-y. The value of residential building approvals rose a modest 2.3 percent, with the boost coming from non-residential approvals that increased by 94.4 percent y-y. Approvals for multi-unit housing developments turned positive with a 5 percent nominal increase, with the strongest increase from smaller dwellings that increased by 60 percent. Alongside a depressed office market, the value of approvals for industrial space and retail space showed a notable increase in September, with the value of retail space approved up three-fold, and industrial space showing an 87 percent increase.
