Building Plans Approved Provincial Summary September 2023

For the month of September 2023, approvals declined across eight of the nine provinces, with Eastern Cape up moderately by 2.6 percent y-y. The strongest decrease measured in SQM, was in Kwazulu Natal where approvals fell 91 000 sqm (or 49 percent) to just over 92 000 sqm.  Western Cape was down 16 percent, Limpopo 2.1 percent, Gauteng, North West Province, and Mpumalanga by over 20 percent, with the decline in Northern Cape and Free State exceeding 50 percent.  Approvals for multi-unit housing developments bucked the trend and increased by 10 percent y-y for the month, with the strongest increase in Gauteng, followed by Kwazulu Natal and Western Cape. However, the outlook remains negative, with approvals in this market segment firmly in the red measured over the last 12 months.
