Building Plans Approved by Province and Type January 1994 - August 2025

Approvals for private sector construction in South Africa fell by R780 million, or 8.8% y-y (nominal) in August 2025 to just over R8bn, with approvals in Gauteng down close to R1bn (36%), and lower values also reported in Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga and Free State. Limpopo and Kwazulu Natal took the lead in August, with approvals up 138% and 11 percent respectively, while only a moderate 2.8% increase was reported for the Western Cape. The value of approvals are around 4% lower in the first eight months of 2025, reaching just over R63bn, with the Western Cape still ahead with a R3bn increase (or 15% y/y) to R23bn.  Gauteng has slumped by R5bn over this period, with Kwazulu Natal down R800m (or 7% y/y).  Other provinces that have shown an increase in private sector demand over this period include Eastern Cape, Free State, Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
