Construction Sector hit by diesel costs as government accelerates infrastructure push

South Africa’s construction and infrastructure sector remained active during the week driven by renewed infrastructure investment commitments, major energy and property developments, and continued focus on public-private sector collaboration. Government reinforced its infrastructure-led growth strategy through new budget allocations, infrastructure reform commitments, and calls for greater private sector participation, while projects in energy, water, roads and mixed-use property developments continued to support long-term construction pipeline optimism.

However, the week also highlighted mounting pressures facing the sector, including rising diesel and construction costs, municipal financial distress, worsening water infrastructure challenges, labour compliance concerns, and increasing competition from imported construction materials. While companies such as Raubex and Afrimat reported signs of resilience, ongoing governance failures, infrastructure maintenance backlogs, and execution risks continue to constrain broader sector recovery and delivery capacity.
