The Construction Market Sentiment Index (CMSI) tracks the performance of selected JSE-listed construction companies to provide a forward-looking view of how financial markets perceive the outlook for South Africa’s construction industry.
Investor sentiment towards South Africa’s listed construction sector weakened during July 2026, despite continued improvements in the financial performance of many of the industry’s leading companies. The Construction Market Sentiment Index (CMSI) declined during the month, with contractors and suppliers recording the largest losses, while residential property funds remained resilient. The divergence suggests that financial markets are waiting for stronger evidence that South Africa’s improving infrastructure pipeline will translate into sustained revenue growth, cash generation and earnings across the broader construction industry.
Although market sentiment softened, the underlying industry fundamentals continued to improve. Listed contractors reported stronger profitability, healthier balance sheets and expanding order books (up 10%), with combined secured workloads reaching their highest nominal level in many years. However, revenue growth remains relatively subdued, indicating that project implementation continues to lag behind project awards. Overall, the CMSI suggests that the sector is transitioning from recovery to execution, where success will increasingly depend on companies converting strong order books into profitable construction activity.
