Wholesale Trade and Retail Sales: Construction Materials May 2023

Please note: Wholesale trade sales of construction materials and retail sales of hardware, paint and glass is now combined in one dataset for easy reference sales of construction materials.

Hardware retail sales continue to underperform against the overall retail sector, while wholesale trade sales of construction materials maintained its stellar performance. Hardware retail sales declined by 7.4 percent y-y in May , against an annual increase of 11.1 percent of construction materials at wholesale. Hardware retail sales fell 3.7 percent y-y in the first five months to R41.7bn, while wholesale sales (in construction) rose 5.9 percent (real terms) to R67bn.  Further analysis provided in the July Construction Monitor.
