Wholesale Trade and Retail Sales: Construction Materials June 2024

Retail sales of hardware materials increased by 1 percent y-y in June 2024, against a more robust 7.9 percent (nominal) increase in total retail sales (the strongest increase in the last 6 months). Sales of hardware materials remain muted, and overall endef flat in nominal terms for the 1st six months of 2024. Overall however, it was a slightly better 2nd quarter compared to a slower start in the 1st three months. Sales of construction materials at wholesale level, slumped by 12.2 percent y-y in June, and has been under greater pressure since March. Overall wholesale trade sales were also weaker, down 4.2 percent y-y in June, with construction significantly underperforming. Construction sales at wholesale level fell by 4 percent y-y in Q1 and 1 percent in Q2, and weakened by 2.4 percent y-y in the first six months of 2024, ending the growth spurt experienced during most of 2023.
