Wholesale Trade and Retail Sales: Construction Materials July 2023

Total wholesale trade sales (current prices) fell 2.8 percent y-y in July 2023, with sales of construction materials bucking the trend with a 13.8 percent y-y increase.  Textiles, Machinery and Equipment also posted double digit increases with all other sectors down on a year on year basis.  For the first seven months sales of construction materials rose 14.8 percent y-y against a 5.3 percent overall increase.  Total retail sales rose 4.6 percent (down 0.1 percent in real terms), with a weaker performance by the construction materials sector. Hardware stores remain the weakest sector in the consumers retail market, and fell by 5.2 percent y-y in real terms during the first seven months.
