Quarterly Financial Statistics Construction March 2025
While information related to gross fixed capital formation estimates (GFCF) for the 1st quarter of 2025 on construction investment has already been published by Statistics South Africa, with the release of the GDP estimates, the quarterly financial statistics released for December 2025 includes more detailed financial information on various sectors in the economy, including the construction sector, that are important indicators for the sector. It also provides a breakdown between large, medium and smaller players in the sector. The dataset includes 13 years historical data (from March 2010 - March 2025), and provides a clearer view on actual turnover in the construction industry, as it excludes the contribution of imported machinery and equipment that is included in the gross fixed capital formation estimates.
Contradicting GFCF estimates for the 1st quarter of 2025, construction turnover recorded another stellar performance, with robust 21.2 percent y-y increase in turnover to R90bn, following a similar increase during the last quarter of 2025. Although larger enterprises also experienced double digit increases in turnover, growth is largely led by the medium size enterprises, where turnover rose 85 percent y-y in Q1. Smaller businesses experienced another dismal quarter, with construction turnover down 48 percent. Despite stronger turnover, margins remained under pressure, with a cumulative loss of 0.4 percent reported by larger enterprises. Despite a strong performance in margins over the last few quarters, smaller enterprises recorded lower margins, alongside weaker turnover.
