Pulse - Construction Material Input Costs jump 8.4% y-y in May 2026

The Composite Construction Material Price Index accelerated sharply during May 2026, increasing by 2.3% month-on-month and 8.4% year-on-year, up from 4.5% in April, signalling that construction cost inflation has become increasingly broad-based. While higher oil prices continued to drive significant increases in road construction materials such as bitumen and asphalt, strong annual inflation in cement, pipes, electrical cable, ready-mix concrete and other key building materials indicates that cost pressures are now extending well beyond energy-related products. Although the recent moderation in oil prices should provide some relief over the coming months, the impact is expected to be gradual as higher transport, electricity and manufacturing costs continue to filter through the supply chain. With construction material inflation once again significantly outpacing headline consumer inflation, contractors and project owners are likely to face renewed pressure on project budgets, tender pricing and profit margins.
