This dataset includes a detailed summary of capital expenditure on new construction works, from 2014 to 2021, by department including National, Provincial, Municipal, Extra-budgetary, Higher Education and SOE's.
According to Stats SA estimates, the public sector spent R114.8bn on new construction works during 2021, down marginally in nominal terms, or 12 percent (real terms) allowing for construction cost inflation. Spending on land and existing buildings was marginal higher in nominal terms (thus a decline in real terms) with provincial governments the highest public sector spender in this segment. The top 3 overall places in terms of expenditure on new construction works in 2021: Eskom, City of Cape and SANRAL. Read more of this in our monthly construction monitor.
