The CRMS index is a composite index of listed JSE companies performance in terms of market capitalisation values, active in the South African Construction Sector.
The Composite CRMS index gained 1.5 percent m-m in July 2024, following a 12.8 percent gain in May 2024. On a year on year basis the index gained 16.2 percent.
The composite CRMS index (including market capitalisation values of contractors, suppliers, retailers, selected residential and non-residential property funds) gained 1.5 percent m-m in July 2024, (compared to the previous month), with gains shown across most of the sub-indices, except for the Suppliers index pulled lower by a 5 percent contraction in Afrimat's market value. Gain in the the Contractors Index continued with a 9.8 percent increase in July, now up 66.5 percent on a year on year basis. The retailers sub-index up showed a modest 1.1 percent gain, but remains weaker on a year on year basis. The property fund indices ended flat, with a recovery in the Residential Property Fund index, offset by no change in Non-Residential Property fund sub-index, despite Resilient and Vukile's market values gaining between 4 percent and 5 percent since June 2024.
The CRMS index excluding the property funds, thus including only Contractors, Suppliers and Retailers, gained a composite 10.7 percent y-y in the first seven months of 2024, with the strongest gain shown in the Contractor's index, up 33.9 percent. This means Contractor's collective market cap values have shown some recovery, currently exceeding pre-covid levels (2019) by 5 percent. The sector is still only a fration of what it was in 2007 (25 percent) having lost 74 percent of the market values over the last 17 years.
According to latest financials, average profitability in the contractor's index was either maintained or improved, reaching an average of 5.1 percent in 2023. Profitability levels improved for local cement manufacturers, while profits were under pressure for Cashbuild, with weaker margins also reported by Italitle and Afrimat, although still at reasonably high levels.
