Expenditure on the hiring and leasing of equipment fell by 20 percent y-y in the 1st quarter, with negative growth (again) reported by larger and medium size enterprises, down 50 percent and 16 percent respectively, while smaller firms reported a sharp rise in expenditure, up 534 percent. Medium size firms continue to spend the highest portion of turnover on hiring and leasing of plant equipment, at 4.7 percent, followed by 1.8 percent by larger enterprises and smaller firms at 1.1 percent. Expenditure on equipment by larger firms slowed from an average of R1.2bn per quarter in 2016 to just R759m in the 1st quarter of 2017.
