Construction Monitor January 2024
In this month’s monitor we include our usual economic overview and an update of key indicators. We also include an overview of the Construction Sector for 2023, as well an update of high impact projects announced in the last two months since our last report as well as an overview for 2023. An update of approvals for private sector building construction shows no reprieve yet, with approvals remaining on a downward trajectory with one or two provinces being the exception. The positive trend in civil tenders have slowed somewhat during the last quarter of 2023, but overall has shown an improved performance for the year. Metropolitan capital budgets have also been increased for 2023/24 (again with exceptions as some Metro’s cut their capital budgets by double digit rates). Following a rather disappointing SONA, we now look forward to the 2024 Budget and what impact it will have on the local construction sector. Will the more favourable allocations in 2023/24 (mainly in transport and energy) be maintained into 2024/25? And will budgetary allocations towards social infrastructure be increased this time round?
