Construction Labour Force 2023Q3
The construction labour force expanded for the 5th consecutive quarter, with the year on year growth accelerating to 11 percent in the 3rd quarter of 2023 to 1 357 000. This is the highest level in 17 quarters (2019Q2), with particular strong growth in the formal sector. The formal construction labour force increased by 21.3 percent y-y against a 6.4 percent contraction in the informal market, the first annual contraction since the beginning of 2021. Since the 2nd quarter of 2023, Gauteng has shown the largest increase in its construction labour force, with an increase of 30 000 to 347 000, followed by North West, Limpopo and Western Cape. Free State and Eastern Cape were the only two provinces, where the labour force in construction has contracted. On average the construction labour force increased by 10 percent y-y in the first three quarters of 2023, with the Western Cape adding 55 000 job opportunities. compared to around 15 000 additional opportunities in Gauteng.
