The construction labour force ended marginally lower in 2022Q4 compared to the previous quarter, down 0.9 percent as a weaker informal market pulled down what appeared to have been a more stable quarter for the informal labour market. Western Cape bucked the trend with strong double digit quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year increases. The construction sector however remains one of the poorer performing sectors, compared to the national average increase of 12 percent y-y in the overall labour force market. None of the economic sectors recorded a decline on a year on year basis, with the manufacturing labour force up 26 percent, mining up 18 percent and trade by 14 percent. The unemployment rate eased to 32.7 percent, with the Northern Cape now having the lowest unemployment rate at 22.1 percent, taking 1st place from Western Cape who now stand at 22.5 percent. Eastern Cape remains the province with the highest unemployment rate (42.1 percent). Gauteng and Kwazulu Natal both recorded an acceleration in their respective unemployment rates to 34 percent and 31.4 percent.
