Construction Activity Dataset May 2026

The number of construction projects out to tender increased by 53% y-y in June 2026, with civil tenders reaching the highest level since September 2023. The bulk of tenders were in the Eastern Cape, where tenders increased by 35% in the first six months of 2026. Kwazulu NAtal also showed a notable increase in tender activity during the first half of 2026, with Gauteng and Western Cape moderately weaker. Other provinces where we are seeing higher levels of tender activity include Free State, Mpumalanga, and North West Province.

The number of awards ended flat in the first six months, and was again led by Eastern Cape where awards rose 17%. We no of 34 projects cancelled in June 2026, mainly in Gauteng and Western Cape. The good news is that we have seen fewer cancellations during the first six months of 2026, with 180 known projects cancelled between January and June 2026 compared to 250 during the same period in 2025.

The Western Cape dominated the value of conbstruction projects awarded in June 2026, with awards exceeding R1bn for the month and is one of only two provinces where awards have increased in the first six months. Western Cape awards rose 36% y-y to R16.4bn, with Free State up 104% to R2.2bn.
