Construction Activity Dataset August 2026
The number of construction projects awarded in August 2026 fell by 10% y-y, and was also 7% lower compared to July. Awards were led by Eastern Cape, contributing a third of the total number of projects awarded during the month and more than doubled compared to July. Free State and North West also saw an increase over the last month, Northern Cape ended flat, while fewer awards were reported in Gauteng, Kwazulu Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and Western Cape.
Tender activity was also dissapointing, and fell by 5% since July and 18% compared to the same month in 2025. Eastern Cape again stood out with the highest number of tenders issued during August, an increase of 71% since July. Tenders also increased in Free State, Kwazulu Natal, North West and Northern Cape. The 5% increase between January and August was largely supported by an increase in water related projects that rose 41% y-y, as road tenders declined by 10%.
For the first eight months however, Kwazulu Natal has shown the strongest increase in tender activity, with an additional 63 tenders issued thus far in 2026 compared to the same period in 2025.
