Cement Trade Statistics Dashboard September 2024

Please note that we have done a revision of the historical data, to remove anamolies likely to linked to incorrect capture or reporting of tarriff codes. These effected only minor quantities, and has not altered the underlying trend in terms of the impact of imported cement on the South African market.

Cementitious production recovered marginally with a 0.4 percent y-y increase in August, following an average 3.5 percent contraction in the previous three months.  For the eight-month period up to August, estimated production levels rose 2.2 percent, against a 20 percent y-y increase in imported cement.  Preliminary results show a 2 percent y-y decrease in imports to 114 241 tons for the month of September 2024, remaining above 100k tons for the last three months.  Vietnam dominated imports in September, at an average FOB customs value of R734/tons, or R37/50kg and an increase of 11 percent in volume year to date to 724 771 tons.  Imports from Mozambique has shown a significant two-fold increase (219 percent), for the first ninemonths of 2024 to over 52 000 tons, compared to 2023, with over 30 000 tons coming in from Namibia at an average FOB value of R1556/ton. Bulk of the cement imported during September 2024 came in via Durban, followed by Port Elizabeth, Komatipoort (from Mozambique) and Skilpadsnek. Nothing was reported via Cape Town for the month, although it was the fourth largest entry point for the 3rd quarter of 2024. An estimated 871 744 tons were imported up to September 2024, compared to 732 643 tons exported from South Africa to mainly Botswana, Lesotho and Eswatini.

52 000 tons of Clinker was imported for the first time from Pakistan, via Durban, likely linked to Huaxim's upgrades based in Durban, however this was not verified.  Clinker imports, mainly from United Arab Emirates via Port Elizabeth, increased by an estimated 24 percent y-y in the first nine months of 2024 to 322 000 tons.
