Cement imports breach 1 million tons in the first ten months of 2024, following a near record increase in October 2024

Cement imports rose near three-fold in October 2024 to 180kt, with imports from Vietnam continuing to dominate imports, with around 8 percent coming in from Mozambique and Namibia. The contribution of imports from Mozambique and Namibia has steadily increased to 10 percent of total imports in the first ten months of 2024, representing a 102 percent y-y increase to just under 100kt.  The  FOB price of cement imported from Vietnam declined by 7 percent to an average of of R770/ton year to date, compared to R830/t during the same period in 2023. Total imports rose 29 percent y-y over the ten period to over 1 million tons, in a market where domestic cement production remains muted and production capacity underutilised.

Around 58kt of clinker was imported during the month of October 2024, from UAE, via Port Elizabeth. This pushed the annual increase to 80 percent y-y to 380kt for the period January to October 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. Over the last 12 months clinker imports reached a record high of 442kt.
