Cement Trade Statistics Dashboard March 2025

The South African cement market is experiencing significant volatility, with both imports and exports showing substantial declines. Import volumes dropped by 31% year-on-year to 322,982 tons as of March 2025, with Vietnam still dominating as the primary supplier, alongside Mozambique and Namibia. The major ports handling these imports were Durban, Port Elizabeth, and Cape Town, though volumes were notably lower, reflecting broader economic uncertainties and fluctuating exchange rates.

Exports mirrored this downward trend, decreasing by 10% to 215,788 tons. Botswana, Lesotho, and Eswatini, traditionally major export markets, showed reduced cement purchases, underscoring weakening regional demand. The growing negative trade balance further emphasized challenges faced by local cement producers competing with imported cement under difficult economic conditions, exacerbated by the Rand's continued weakness against the US Dollar.
