Vietnam increase imports via Cape Town

Cement imports surge, as August imports jump to over 200 000 tons, and close to 1 million tons in the first eight months of 2025. Domestic  mineral sales of limestone (a core raw input material for the production of cement) increased by 14 percent in July that may hint at stronger domestic production levels, but imports continue to pose a threat to local producers. Imports continue to be dominated by Vietnam, and although the bulk is coming into the country via Durban, imports via Cape Town is increasing at a significant pace, now contributing 14 percent of total imports from Vietnam between January and August 2025, up 171 percent y-y from an 8 percent contribution during the same period in 2024. Vietnam imports via Durban is also on the rise, with strong increases also reported in imports from Mozambique and Namibia.
