Approvals for private sector construction increased by 34.7 percent m-m in March 2022 and this was also up by 18.9 percent on a year on year basis. Close to 1.5 million sqm were approved during March, with a notable increase in approvals for non-residential space, mainly within the industrial sector in Gauteng where 270 475 sqm were approved. Housing in the Western Cape also increased during March, making Western Cape overall the province with the strongest increase compared to March 2021. Over the last 12 months, approvals in Gauteng increased by 1.3 million sqm to 4.2m (an increase of 47.2 percent), with a 39.2 percent increase reported for the Western Cape (or 1.2m sqm to 4.4m). Eastern Cape and Kwazulu Natal reported softer growths in terms of private sector potential construction, with an increase of 8.2 percent and 13.8 percent respectively.
