Western Cape was the only higher capacity province to show a y-y increase in the number of SQM approved for private sector building construction in February 2022, up 28.9 percent. Eastern Cape, Kwazulu Natal and Gauteng all recorded robust declines for the month. Kwazulu Natal recorded the strongest year on year decline for the month. Over the last 12 months, Western Cape has surpassed Gauteng as the province with the highest number of SQM approved for private sector construction, with a contribution of 31.6 percent (compared to Gauteng's 30.2 percent). Gauteng however has a stronger focus on the industrial market, while Western Cape leads in the residential market. Overall 13.7 million SQM were approved over the last 12 months, with an estimated value of R108bn (current prices).
