Approvals for private sector construction, measured in SQM, fell by 3 percent y-y in October, but while Gauteng recorded a 17 percent decline, approvals in the Western Cape increased by 23.9 percent, with a 25 percent increase in approvals for new housing construction and a 21 percent increase in home renovations. In stark contrast Gauteng fell by 1.5 percent for new home construction and renovations slumped by 21.3 percent. Western Cape accounted for 34 percent of total private sector construction projects approved (SQM) over the 12 month period up to October.
