Western Cape recorded the highest number of sqm approved in May 2022, largely within the residential market where close to 250 000sqm were approved during the month, with Gauteng approving less than half of that. Western Cape also approved the highest number of sqm with regards to home renovations and industrial space. Overall approvals in the Western Cape increased by 40.1 percent y-y in May 2022, compared to a 41 percent y-y decline recorded for Gauteng. Approvals in Eastern Cape and Kwazulu Natal were also lower, down 11.6 percent and 6.0 percent respectively. The Western Cape is now firmly in the lead as the province with the highest number of sqm approved for private sector construction over the last 12 months, followed by Gauteng.
